The Symposium on Research in Veterinary Medicine 2017 aims to promote a short-term meeting for discussion and updating on topics of interest and related to scientific activities involving veterinary medicine in its various aspects and contributing to the development of One Health initiatives. In this edition, the main theme of the symposium will be the role of veterinary medicine in environmental health. The symposium specific objectives are:
- Dissemination of scientific results developed by the attendants and lecturers;
- Encouragement of scientific exchange with different institutions;
- Promotion of a debate with the different groups that develop One Health initiatives in Brazil;
- Discussion of the importance of interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity in veterinary medicine teaching;
- Discussion of the challenges and areas of occupation of the former Graduate Program in Veterinary Medicine students.
All of these proposals interact directly with each other, providing a growing development of veterinary medicine and different communication axes with other areas involved in a more efficient health promotion. In addition, the objectives proposed for this event were elaborated in accordance with the solutions stimulated by CAPES for Veterinary Medicine presented in the 2016 area document, which makes the model proposed for this event highly relevant in several aspects. Thus, it is intended to create new possibilities, also in the context of the indissociability of research, teaching, and extension, giving participants a multiplier potential of knowledge and opportunities in the different areas.
One Health is a global concept of health promotion based on strategies to a better understanding of health issues created by human, animal and environmental domains interaction. Considering the increasing interdependence between humans and other animals, health sciences have been working closely together in a collaborative approach. This approach results in several benefits such as improved animal, human and environmental health; construction of new challenges in health development; development of excellence centers for education and training, nurturing collaboration among research groups; creation of new opportunities for different health professionals; growth of scientific knowledge to create innovative programs for health development. In this context, discussions with professionals from different institutions and organizations aiming greater integration between areas, broader scientific dissemination and more rapid updating of methods and processes are fundamental for veterinary medicine progress. The Symposium will also receive abstracts submission to be presented as posters during the event and some of these abstracts will be selected for oral presentation within the main program. The results of the event and the submitted abstracts will be organized in Annals and distributed in electronic format. Thus, it is intended to create new possibilities, inside the context of the indissociability of research, teaching, and extension, giving participants a multiplier potential of knowledge and opportunities in the different areas. This same effect will also be achieved with the rapprochement of former students during the event.
